The
regional municipality of Wood Buffalo is located in the northeastern
corner of Alberta. Created in 1995 as an amalgamation of
the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District 143, it
now ranks, by area, among the largest municipalities in North
America, and is the largest in Canada. Under its 68,454 km² of
wilderness lie vast oil sand deposits, also known as the
Athabasca Tar Sands, helping |
 |
to
make the region one of the fastest growing industrial areas
in Canada.
Known
as Alberta's "Northern Light," Fort
McMurray is the major commercial, cultural,
and recreational center for the oil
sands region and headquarters of The
Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. |
